Gorilla trekking can range from a relatively easy walk to a physically demanding hike, depending on the location of the gorilla family on a given day. Treks can last anywhere from one to six hours through dense rainforests, steep slopes, and at times muddy trails, all at altitudes of up to 2,600 meters (8,500 feet). While porters are available to help carry backpacks and assist hikers, a basic level of physical fitness greatly enhances the overall gorilla trekking experience.

During gorilla trekking, visitors are required to maintain a 7-meter (about 23 feet) distance from the gorillas to minimize the risk of transmitting human diseases and to prevent disturbing their natural behavior. However, gorillas are sometimes curious and may approach closer on their own terms. Regardless, trekkers are advised to remain calm and follow all instructions from park rangers to ensure a safe and respectful interaction with these magnificent animals.
